Puello Herrera recibe en Puerto Rico reconocimiento a 34 años de aportes al béisbol caribeño

Juan Francisco Puello Herrera, who has served as Commissioner of the Caribbean Professional Baseball Confederation (CBPC) for 34 years, was honored in Puerto Rico on Wednesday night during the opening ceremony of the 2026‑27 season of the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League (LBPRC). The ceremony took place at the Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, before the match between the defending champions Cangrejeros de Santurce and the Leones de Ponce. Puello Herrera will conclude his tenure in July 2027, when his 34‑year service to the CBPC ends. “I was at the opening of the 2026‑27 tournament of the Roberto Clemente League and I thank the recognition that was given to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” he said. Since joining the CBPC in 1993, Puello Herrera has overseen a period of transformation that expanded the Caribbean Series beyond its traditional four leagues. The series has added invited leagues, strengthened ties with professional baseball organizations, and increased its international profile. Recent milestones include the 2024 Caribbean Series in Miami, held at LoanDepot Park, the home of the Miami Marlins. That edition featured seven teams and was the first time the championship was played in a Major League Baseball stadium, broadening the event’s reach to the Latino community in the United States. In 2023, the Gran Caracas Series brought together eight teams across two stadiums, further demonstrating the tournament’s growth. The CBPC has also focused on preserving the sport’s heritage and fostering future talent. The Hall of Fame for the Caribbean Series was established in 1996, and the organization launched the Caribbean Series Kids in Panama in 2024. A Caribbean Series Teens event is scheduled for 2027, expanding international opportunities for youth and junior players. During the Puerto Rican opening ceremony, two figures closely linked to the series’ history were honored. Cándido “Candy” Maldonado, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2011, received a tribute to the Puerto Rican season, while Carlos Beltrán—member of the 2001 Culiacán All‑Stars team and a 2026 inductee of the Cooperstown Hall of Fame—had his number 15 retired. The recognition in San Juan marks the beginning of a special period for Puello Herrera, who will be honored by the CBPC’s member leagues in the coming months before concluding a tenure that has shaped the modern era of Caribbean baseball.
