Pelea entre diputados obliga a suspender sesión del Parlamento de Armenia

On Thursday, 29 October, a session of the Armenian Parliament was interrupted by a physical clash between members of the ruling Civil Contract party and opposition lawmakers. The confrontation erupted while legislators debated the appointment of a new member to the Chamber of Auditors, the body that oversees public spending. The dispute began when Civil Contract deputy Taron Chakhoyan made remarks about the family of opposition leader Narek Karapetyan, leader of the Armenia Strong faction. Chakhoyan referenced a proposal attributed to a relative of Karapetyan to create a ministry aimed at “satisfying women.” Karapetyan responded from his seat, and the verbal exchange escalated. Several deputies stood up and began pushing each other, and the fight spread to the hemicycle and the corridors of the building. Sillas were thrown and several lawmakers were injured. According to Armenian media reports, one opposition deputy suffered a nasal hemorrhage, while another sustained torn clothing. The incident prompted the intervention of parliamentary security forces. Parliamentary President Ruben Rubinyan initially refused to break the session, urging lawmakers to cease the confrontation or return to their seats. As the violence intensified, he eventually called for a recess and requested the presence of security personnel. After the break, the session resumed, and Rubinyan placed primary responsibility on Karapetyan, citing his interruption of Chakhoyan’s speech and loss of control. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan condemned the violence but attributed responsibility to the opposition, expressing support for the actions of his party’s deputies. The episode highlights ongoing tensions between the ruling party and its adversaries, a pattern that has seen several confrontations in the Armenian Parliament during October.
