Alžírsko vyšle vojakov do Nigeru, prvýkrát od 70. rokov budú pôsobiť mimo svojho územia

Algeria approved today the deployment of its army to neighboring Niger, where the troops will help safeguard energy facilities, according to the AFP news agency. The decision marks the first time the country has sent soldiers abroad since 1973, when Algerian forces were dispatched to support Egypt during the Arab‑Israeli war. The move comes amid growing security cooperation between Algeria and Niger, a country that frequently experiences attacks by various armed groups along its 960‑kilometre border with Algeria. Both governments have agreed to strengthen joint efforts against jihadist organisations, cross‑border crime and human trafficking. The proposal was approved by both chambers of the Algerian parliament. Analysts say the decision represents a departure from Algeria’s long‑standing doctrine of non‑intervention in foreign conflicts. They note that the deployment is partly motivated by the need to secure a future trans‑Saharan gas pipeline that would transport natural gas from Nigeria to Europe through Niger. Algeria and Niger are currently working on the construction of this pipeline, which is intended to bring gas from Nigeria to European markets via Niger’s territory.
