PARAMARIBO — The Suriname Police Force has launched an investigation into the assault of a suspect identified as L.Z., alias "Afieka," who was attacked by a group of people at Zorg en Hoop Airport on Saturday. The police confirmed the incident following the circulation of video footage on social media. The suspect had been arrested earlier that day in connection with a fatal shooting in Snesibergi, located in the Brokopondo district. Police received reports of the homicide on Friday afternoon, with information suggesting the suspect was hiding in a nearby camp and intended to surrender. Due to logistical challenges, a joint team consisting of officers from the Brokopondo station, the Capital Offenses Department, and the Forensic Investigation unit reached the area on Saturday to take the suspect into custody. During the arrest, police seized a handbag containing various types of ammunition belonging to the suspect. With the assistance of a local entrepreneur, the victim’s body and the suspect were transported to Paramaribo via a chartered flight on Saturday afternoon. Upon arrival at Zorg en Hoop Airport, police were confronted by a group of individuals, believed to be acquaintances of the victim, who had gathered at the airfield. According to authorities, the crowd overwhelmed the officers, allowing them to assault the suspect before police could intervene and secure him. Following the incident, the suspect was transferred to the Capital Offenses Department. He received medical treatment at the Emergency Department of the Academic Hospital Paramaribo before being brought before a prosecutor. The police have stated that they will take strict action against those who participated in the assault or attempted to take the law into their own hands. Investigations into both the initial fatal shooting and the subsequent assault at the airport are ongoing. Article source: De Ware Tijd | Image credit: De Ware Tijd
