Tirana’s Archive Museum Places Documents at the Heart of Albania’s History

A museum at Albania’s General Directorate of Archives in Tirana presents the country’s history through documents, photographs, maps and manuscripts. Its central idea is straightforward: written records can be the main exhibits through which visitors explore social, cultural and institutional life.

According to an Albanian Telegraphic Agency report carried by the AMAN alliance, the Archive Museum opened on October 6. Its collection includes historical and administrative documents, books, magazines and other materials connected with Albania’s public life.

At the opening, General Director of Archives Auron Rrokaj distinguished the project from a museum devoted to the history of an institution. The focus, he explained, is the documents themselves. Records from different periods provide evidence of the country’s social and institutional development.

The presentation combines physical archival material with digital displays, holograms, quizzes and other interactive features. Rrokaj identified younger visitors as a particular audience for these elements and encouraged them to develop an interest in paper records.

ATA placed the opening within wider changes at the National Archives aimed at improving the preservation, management and digitisation of its collections. The museum gives those collections a public exhibition setting, alongside their role as preserved historical evidence.

For visitors, its distinctive feature is that Albania’s past is approached through the records people and institutions left behind. Photographs, publications and administrative papers become the objects through which that history is explored.
