Dr Surujrattan Rambachan has revealed he has been diagnosed with stage four cancer. the former government minister and Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago recipient said he made a terrible mistake by neglecting his health over the last couple of years. He described his situation plainly, saying he is fighting for his life, but made clear he is not seeking sympathy for mistakes he said caused the illness.
Instead, Rambachan said he has chosen to treat his diagnosis as an opportunity to do something different. Over the past few weeks, he said he has been visiting temples and other places to speak to audiences about the need for prostate cancer testing. He warned that once prostate cancer moves beyond the prostate and affects the bone, as it has in his case, the road ahead is long, with recovery uncertain.
Rambachan said he has reinvented a new purpose for himself even in the midst of his illness, becoming a public advocate for early testing. He said the effort is going very well.
He also pointed to the reach of his personal story, saying a Facebook post about how he is coping and the question of faith was accessed by almost 100,000 people. Beyond that reach, he said he has been receiving numerous calls of support.
Rambachan closed his remarks with a direct plea, telling people to go and get tested because your life is the only thing that you have.
