Exit polls from the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania election indicate that the CDU received approximately 5 percent of the vote, marking its lowest result in any German state since the Second World War. Conversely, the anti-immigration AfD party saw significant gains and is projected to win the election. This follows a recent victory for the party in Saxony-Anhalt, representing the second state-level win for the AfD in two weeks.
Weidel urged Merz to reconsider his party’s refusal to cooperate with the AfD. She stated that Merz must draw consequences for the sake of his party and for Germany. While Weidel asserted that the AfD has received a mandate to govern in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the German Press Agency (DPA) reports that the party is unlikely to find a coalition partner to form a government. Tino Chrupalla, the other co-chair of the AfD, described the election results in the state as sensational.
