Throughout the event, participants chanted, Pedals for peace, Hommage à Miguel Masaisai.
Masaisai, 23, was known for his project titled Pedals for peace, through which he was attempting to cycle from Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo, to Rabat, Morocco, to promote a message of peace. Participants at the Kinshasa event described him as a courageous and committed individual who served as a source of hope for the youth of the country.
Awolo Jonathan, a cycling coach, stated that Masaisai’s message of peace should be honored, noting that the young cyclist had demonstrated that youth could drive meaningful change. Abrham Luakabuanga, president of the Lukunga Cycling Entente, called on Congolese authorities to grant Masaisai national recognition, suggesting he be awarded the title of commander or knight of the National Order of the Leopard for his contributions to the nation.
A similar symbolic race was held on Sunday in Goma, the provincial capital of North Kivu, where Masaisai was based. Friends, family, and fellow cyclists gathered there to mourn his passing and reflect on his legacy.
