Tourism Minister Pushes Back Against Proposed Accommodation Tax Increase

Belize’s Minister of Tourism, Honorable Anthony Mahler, has publicly opposed a proposed increase in the country’s hotel accommodation tax, which would raise the rate from 9% to 12.5%.

Mahler said the timing of the proposal was not appropriate, describing the recent announcement as premature. He noted that discussions about the tax change have been ongoing for nearly two years.

The proposal has drawn growing opposition from industry stakeholders and the public, who argue that the tax hike could negatively impact tourism revenue and competitiveness.

Mahler’s remarks come as the government considers the tax adjustment, which would affect all lodging establishments in Belize.
