A technical fault at one of Bangladesh’s two floating LNG terminals off Maheshkhali has slashed gas supply to the national grid by nearly half, deepening the country’s energy crisis. The shutdown of the floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) has suspended around 450 million cubic feet of gas per day (MMcfd), leaving the national grid with just over 2 billion cubic feet daily against a demand of 4 billion cubic feet.
The shortfall has hit residential, commercial, and industrial consumers hard. In Dhaka, many CNG filling stations have been forced to close due to low gas pressure, while others operate intermittently. The crisis underscores Bangladesh’s heavy reliance on imported LNG, which after regasification is fed into the pipeline network through two offshore FSRUs.
Authorities have not yet announced a timeline for repairs, and the Energy Bangla report highlights that nearly 40% of the country’s gas demand remains unmet. Consumers across affected areas face prolonged outages, with no immediate relief in sight.
