A technical fault at the Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal in Maheshkhali has severely reduced gas supply to Bangladesh’s national grid, deepening the ongoing energy crisis. Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company issued a notice Tuesday stating that the national grid is receiving approximately 450 million cubic feet (MMcf) less gas per day due to the fault.
Residential areas across Dhaka and other regions are experiencing little to no gas for most of the day, leaving households unable to cook. In some areas, supply has been completely cut off. Industrial zones are also affected, with factories forced to reduce production due to insufficient gas pressure. Export-oriented industries are particularly concerned about potential adverse impacts.
Bangladesh’s daily gas demand stands at around 3.8 billion cubic feet (Bcf), but even under normal conditions, the grid receives only about 2.7 Bcf per day. The latest disruption has further widened the gap. Titas warned that gas pressure for all consumer categories will remain low until the situation normalizes.
