Sasol plant fire: Three workers injured, one in ICU as Labour Department investigates

A fire at Sasol’s polyethylene plant in Sasolburg has left three contractor employees injured, with one worker still in intensive care, the Department of Employment and Labour confirmed.

The department has launched a full investigation and issued a prohibition notice at the site, halting operations in the affected area. Officials say the probe will determine the cause of the blaze and whether safety protocols were followed.

Sasol has not yet released a statement, but the incident raises fresh concerns about workplace safety in South Africa’s industrial sector. The injured workers were contractors, highlighting vulnerabilities in contract labour protections.

The prohibition notice remains in force while investigators examine the scene. The department urged anyone with information to come forward as part of the inquiry.
