Waterford United have secured the services of Swansea City defender Blair McKenzie on loan until the end of the season, as the Blues look to strengthen their Premier Division survival bid.
The 20-year-old left-sided centre-half brings versatility to Graham Coughlan’s side, capable of playing at left-back, left wing-back, and even in midfield. Coughlan believes McKenzie’s adaptability will be invaluable for a squad competing on multiple fronts.
“Blair will give us good balance with his left-foot,” the Waterford boss said. “He can play at left-back, left wing-back, left sided centre-half and also in midfield. When you’ve got a small squad, players like Blair with his versatility are key for us.”
McKenzie joins after making 50 appearances for Scottish sides Montrose and Elgin City before moving to Swansea last year. He expressed excitement about the move: “I’ve heard so much about the passion here and can’t wait to pull on the jersey for the first time.”
The loan signing is expected to feature immediately as Waterford battle to avoid relegation.
