Citizens who experience an earthquake are being encouraged to submit their experiences to the UWI Seismic Research Centre’s Earthquake Feedback Portal. The online platform enables individuals across the Eastern Caribbean to share first-hand accounts of shaking intensity, duration, location, and any visual damage or unusual effects they witnessed. This wealth of data aids scientists in determining the intensity of an earthquake and understanding how seismic events uniquely impact different communities.
When reporting an earthquake, users are asked to detail their location at the time, whether others nearby also felt the tremors, the duration and perceived strength of the shaking. Additional information such as any structural damage, objects that moved or fell, and other noteworthy observations can also be submitted. If necessary, participants can leave their email address for scientists to request further information.
The UWI Seismic Research Centre holds the official responsibility of monitoring earthquakes and volcanic activity in the English-speaking Eastern Caribbean. Public submissions are crucial in supplementing instrumental data, enabling researchers to formulate more accurate assessments of earthquake intensity across the region.
