Guyana: Gifts from Guyana’s President to Biden Sent to US Archives

A painting, a gold brooch, and a lapel pin that were presented by President Irfaan Ali of Guyana to then US President Joe Biden have been sent to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). This information was disclosed in a document from the US State Department’s Federal Register.

The painting, titled “At Parika Stelling (Guyana),” was received on March 2, 2022, and is estimated to be valued at approximately US$650.00. Additionally, on August 8, 2022, President Ali presented a gold brooch and a Guyana flag lapel pin, which have an estimated combined value of US$736. For the calendar year 2022, the minimum value for gifts that require disclosure is set at US$415.00.

The gifts have been sent to NARA, which is responsible for managing the collection of both foreign and domestic gifts given to US presidents. According to the Federal Register, the justification for accepting these gifts is that “Non-acceptance would cause embarrassment to the donor and the U.S. Government.” This aligns with US law, which mandates that the president, cabinet members, and other high-ranking officials disclose the receipt of gifts exceeding a specified value.
