The Fiftieth Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) was held in St Kitts and Nevis, from 24-27 February 2026. All Member States were duly informed of the Programme of Events and the Draft Agenda of the Meeting, a compliance that was acknowledged by all, including Trinidad and Tobago.
Special provisions were made for the Heads of Government, including tailored CARICOM shirts and detailed information about the Retreat. The Retreat, a key part of the conference, had agenda items focusing on Geopolitical Developments and Financing and Governance of the Community.
However, Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister, the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, departed from St. Kitts and Nevis on the first day of the Conference, missing the Retreat scheduled for the following day. Her absence was noted, and the Foreign Minister of Trinidad and Tobago was invited to attend in her stead.
However, the Foreign Minister declined the invitation, citing personal issues with using the water taxi transit, a standard mode of transportation in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. He expressed fears of seasickness, preventing him from attending the Retreat.
