Pan Trinbago, the national organisation representing steelbands, has refuted remarks by National Gas Company (NGC) chairman Gerald Ramdeen, arguing that his comments underestimate the social, cultural and economic impact of steelbands and misrepresent corporate sponsorship. The organisation has expressed concern over NGC’s decision to withdraw sponsorship from three steelbands and from the organisation itself, terming the move a ‘regrettable lack of consideration’. Pan Trinbago stressed that the steelbands function far beyond musical performance and that the loss of a sponsor affects not only musicians but also the broader social fabric. It also emphasized the steelpan instrument as a key pillar of cultural tourism and national identity.
