The Arabian Gulf Cup, one of the oldest and most established regional football tournaments, has served as a significant sporting event for Gulf nations for over 56 years. Held biennially, the competition has played a central role in fostering regional sports ties and promoting unity among participating nations.
The tournament is credited with driving the development of sports infrastructure across the Gulf, including the construction of stadiums and sports cities. It has also served as a catalyst for regional success, contributing to Asian Cup victories and qualifications for the FIFA World Cup. Notably, Qatar hosted the 2022 World Cup, and Saudi Arabia is scheduled to host the tournament in 2034.
The concept for the Gulf Cup was proposed by Prince Khalid Al-Faisal and adopted by the Kingdom of Bahrain through Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa in 1968. Following approval from then-FIFA President Stanley Rous, the inaugural tournament took place on March 27, 1970, in Bahrain. The first edition featured four teams: Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, with Kuwait emerging as the champion. The tournament expanded over time, with Yemen becoming the eighth nation to join during the 17th edition in Qatar in 2004.
The Oman national team made its debut in the tournament during the 1974 edition in Kuwait. Oman secured its first title in 2009 while hosting the event and won its second title in 2017 at the 23rd Gulf Cup in Kuwait. The team has reached the final six times, finishing as runners-up in 2004, 2007, 2023, and 2025.
Individual achievements for Oman include goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi, who won the best goalkeeper award four consecutive times between the 16th and 19th editions. Ghulam Khamis was named the best player in 1984, and Ahmed Mubarak (Kano) received the same honor in 2017. Additionally, Hani Al-Dhabit and Imad Al-Hosni were top scorers in the 2002 and 2004 tournaments, respectively. Rashid Jaber remains the only national coach to lead the Omani team in the competition, notably securing second place during his tenure.
To date, the Kuwait national team holds the record for the most tournament titles, having won the championship 10 times.
