South Korea is preparing to tighten its crackdown on exam cheating by using smart glasses. The government plans to criminalise the use of such devices during examinations and will extend the period during which a student who is caught is barred from retaking the test from the current one year to three years. The Ministry of Education announced the new measures on Thursday, October 29, ahead of the national university entrance exam scheduled for next month. The plan includes deploying trained personnel at each test venue to identify suspicious eyewear and to monitor candidates for the use of smart glasses that can record video and connect to artificial‑intelligence assistants. Officials said that the legal changes required to enforce the new rules are unlikely to be completed before the upcoming exam, and that the legislation will be implemented next year. The move follows recent incidents in Seoul, where three students were caught wearing or holding smart glasses during thesis examinations at different universities. The government’s initiative reflects a broader effort to preserve the integrity of South Korea’s competitive university admissions process.
