Twelve Italian regions were placed under yellow storm alerts on Friday, September 18, as a weather system moved from the north toward central and southern parts of the country. The Civil Protection department issued the warnings for Abruzzo, Basilicata, Campania, Lazio, Lombardy, Marche, Molise, Puglia, Sardinia, Sicily, Tuscany, and Umbria.
The alerts follow a series of intense storms on Thursday that resulted in flooding, fallen trees, and significant disruption. In the Marche region, firefighters conducted more than 70 emergency interventions, primarily in the areas of Ancona and Macerata. According to RaiNews, Palermo experienced over 40 emergency calls, including the rescue of two drivers trapped on flooded roads.
Florence also reported heavy rainfall, with more than 45 millimeters recorded in a single hour. At the Uffizi Gallery, water leaked through a skylight into a room housing 17th-century paintings, including Caravaggio’s Bacchus. The museum reported that while water splashed onto the display case, no artworks were damaged. The room was scheduled to reopen on Friday morning.
Meteorologist Lorenzo Tedici of ilMeteo.it stated that Friday would be characterized by changeable weather, with brief showers alternating with dry spells. Rain was expected to be concentrated in the northwest, the central Adriatic coast, Lazio, Campania, and Sicily during the morning, shifting toward central and southern Italy by the afternoon. Conditions in the north are expected to improve gradually.
Forecasters expect weather conditions to stabilize over the weekend. Saturday is projected to bring clearer skies to northern Italy, while showers may persist in central and southern regions. By Sunday, more stable conditions are expected across most of the country, with only residual showers remaining in the south.
Looking ahead to next week, meteorologists are monitoring the potential for cooler air from northern Europe to reach eastern Italy. Temperatures could fall below seasonal averages between Wednesday and Friday, particularly in the Adriatic regions and the south, though the forecast remains subject to change.
