Suriname’s Minister of Finance, Adelien Wijnerman, has stated that the primary objective of the new General Tax Law (Algemene Wet Belastingen) is to improve the efficiency of tax collection rather than to increase the overall tax burden on citizens.
During the parliamentary debate regarding the legislation in De Nationale Assemblee, Wijnerman emphasized that the success of the new law should be measured by the government’s ability to better identify, monitor, and collect existing tax obligations. According to the minister, the focus remains on strengthening administrative processes to ensure that current tax requirements are met more effectively.
