**Former India Captain Bruno Coutinho Calls for More High‑Profile Fixtures Ahead of Brazil, Uruguay, Panama Friendlies**
*Kolkata, India – August 29, 2026 (ANI)* – Former Indian national team captain and Arjuna Award recipient Bruno Coutinho said that upcoming friendly matches against Brazil, Uruguay and Panama will give Indian football “invaluable experience” and help the side improve.
The three World Cup‑qualified nations are scheduled to visit India during the September‑October FIFA international window. India will open the series against Panama on 26 September in Bengaluru, followed by Brazil on 3 October and Uruguay on 6 October. Both latter fixtures will be played at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata.
Coutinho, who earned 44 caps for India between the late 1980s and 2001, was honoured with the Arjuna Award and named AIFF Player of the Year in 1996. Since retiring, he has remained active in Indian football through grassroots programmes, state ambassadorships and coaching mentorship.
Speaking to the press, Coutinho highlighted the challenge posed by the South American opponents: “Brazil and Uruguay are very tough opponents. Everybody knows how strong they are and how consistently they qualify for the World Cup. The Indian players will find it hard, but they should give their best and play to their full potential. Whether we win or lose, we can learn from our mistakes.”
He added that a single match cannot transform the nation’s football fortunes. “One or two matches cannot change everything. India has to work consistently and improve as a footballing nation. We have to play more big matches like these,” he said.
Coutinho also outlined a longer‑term goal for the national team: “India should first aim to be among the top 10 teams in Asia. If they can do that, we can start thinking about achieving bigger things. They should not be afraid of the challenge. They should play their best, learn from their mistakes, and use that experience to improve Indian football in the long term.”
