Mićo Stanišić, a former Bosnian Serb official convicted of war crimes, has filed a new request for early release from prison. Stanišić is currently serving a 22-year sentence handed down by the Hague Tribunal for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed during the conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The request was submitted to the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) by Stanišić’s legal counsel, Slobodan M. Zečević. The filing argues for his release based on the time he has already served and other legal considerations.
Stanišić served as the Minister of Internal Affairs for the Republika Srpska during the Bosnian War. He was found guilty of participating in a joint criminal enterprise that targeted non-Serb populations through persecution, murder, and torture. The Hague Tribunal’s final judgment confirmed his responsibility for these crimes, which occurred between April and December 1992.
This is not the first time Stanišić has sought an early release from his sentence. The court will now review the latest submission to determine if he meets the criteria for a reduction in his prison term.
