Venezuelan Man Dies, Two Survive After Boat Capsizes in Rough Trinidad Seas

A tragic incident unfolded late Friday night when a boat allegedly transporting copper illegally to Venezuela overturned in rough seas off the southern coast of Trinidad. The accident resulted in the death of a Venezuelan national, Julio Lopez, while two others, including Nikol Landaeta, survived the ordeal.

The survivors managed to reach the shore safely and recounted their harrowing experience to local residents in Icacos. They explained that the vessel capsized as they were making their way to Venezuela. This incident comes on the heels of another tragedy where two Venezuelan migrants, including a young girl, drowned in the Columbus Channel.

The recent earthquake off Venezuela has reportedly made sea conditions in the Gulf of Paria and Columbus Channel increasingly perilous. Fishermen and residents have noted possible changes in the seabed and coastline, contributing to the hazardous conditions.

In response to the incident, the Hunters Search and Rescue Team, led by Captain Vallence Rambharat, conducted a thorough search from Icacos to Galfa Point on Saturday night. Despite initial fears that Landaeta was missing, both survivors were eventually found alive.

This series of maritime tragedies highlights the ongoing risks faced by those attempting to navigate these waters, often under dangerous and illegal circumstances.
