UK Foreign Office warns British travellers over Saudi security risks amid airport attacks

The UK Foreign Office has issued a formal security advisory urging British citizens to avoid all non-essential travel to Jeddah, Dammam, and most Saudi Arabian airports, citing heightened security risks following a series of attacks. The directive, released by the British Embassy in Riyadh, specifically advises against using King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh until further notice, following serious security incidents reported on October 10. Only Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Medina remains categorised as safe for travel.

The warnings come after a series of missile strikes targeting critical infrastructure, including King Khalid International Airport, King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, and facilities operated by Saudi state oil company Aramco. Saudi authorities have confirmed multiple casualties and injuries from these attacks, which the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen has attributed to the Houthi movement. The Houthis have characterised the strikes as war crimes violating international humanitarian law.

The escalation in hostilities between Saudi-backed forces and Houthi rebels in Yemen has intensified regional instability, prompting several nations to update travel advisories. The UK’s move reflects growing concerns over the safety of British nationals in Saudi Arabia, particularly in light of the recent violence. The Foreign Office has not specified a timeline for reviewing the advisory but has emphasised the need for heightened caution.

This development follows a broader pattern of travel restrictions imposed by Western governments in response to regional conflicts. The UK’s decision underscores the direct impact of Middle Eastern instability on British citizens abroad, with potential implications for tourism, business travel, and diplomatic relations.
