UK and France conduct first joint drill simulating a nuclear airstrike

The United Kingdom and France have conducted their first joint exercise simulating a nuclear airstrike, with British Eurofighter Typhoons providing cover for French Rafale fighter jets, according to Militarnyi, citing the UK Ministry of Defence.

The exercise, codenamed Rummy, took place over the Mediterranean Sea on 20–21 October 2026. French Rafales departed from Saint-Dizier Air Base in northeastern France to carry out the simulated strike, while British aircraft protected the strike group. Crews practised coordinating air operations between the two countries.

Militarnyi described the manoeuvres as the first practical example of this form of nuclear cooperation between London and Paris, which had previously conducted nuclear deterrence operations independently. The report describes a simulated mission; it does not report the use of a nuclear weapon.

The exercise formed part of the implementation of the Northwood Declaration, adopted by the two countries in July 2025. According to the report, that agreement provides for closer cooperation on nuclear deterrence while preserving each country’s independent control over its arsenal and its decisions about using it.

The aircraft had distinct roles in the exercise. The Rafale can carry the ASMP-A supersonic cruise missile equipped with a nuclear warhead, while the British Typhoons supplied cover. The report does not specify whether the French aircraft carried missiles during the drill.

The central development is therefore the coordination of a French simulated strike with British fighter protection. Under the arrangement described in the report, closer operational cooperation accompanies continued national authority over nuclear weapons.
