U.S. Pushes Liberia to Modernize Credit System

The United States government has urged Liberia to modernize its credit information system as part of a series of reforms intended to strengthen the nation’s financial sector and increase access to credit. The proposal includes a recommendation to link the credit records of borrowers directly to the national identification system.

The call for reform was issued by U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Joseph “Joe” during a recent engagement in Monrovia. According to the U.S. government, these updates are essential for improving the transparency and efficiency of the Liberian financial landscape, ultimately facilitating broader economic participation.

The initiative is part of a wider effort to modernize Liberia’s financial infrastructure, which officials suggest will help mitigate risks for lenders and provide more opportunities for individuals and businesses to secure financing. The Liberian government has been encouraged to prioritize these technical upgrades to align with international financial standards.
