Trump Wants FIFA World Cup Back in United States After 2026 Success

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey — U.S. President Donald Trump says he wants the FIFA World Cup to return to the United States after what he described as the overwhelming success of the 2026 tournament. Speaking during a pre-match interview before the FIFA World Cup Final between Spain and Argentina, Trump praised the record-breaking attendance, packed stadiums, and strong television viewership seen throughout the competition.

“Based on the numbers, we will be requesting it again immediately,” Trump said, suggesting the United States should pursue hosting another World Cup alongside a co-host nation in the future. Following Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina after extra time, Trump again highlighted the tournament’s impact, declaring, “It turns out we are a soccer country.”

The 2026 FIFA World Cup was the largest in the tournament’s history, expanding to 48 teams and being jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Millions of fans attended matches across the three countries, while fan festivals and viewing events attracted large crowds throughout the month-long tournament.

Although Trump’s comments reflect his support for bringing the event back to the United States, no future World Cup beyond the already-awarded 2034 tournament has been assigned by FIFA. Any new U.S. bid would therefore be for a later edition. The success of the 2026 competition has already fueled discussions among fans and football officials about when the United States could once again host the world’s biggest sporting event.
