AI Data Centre Plans Spark Power and Water Debate in Trinidad and Tobago
Plans to establish major artificial intelligence data centres in Trinidad and Tobago have sparked debate over the potential demands the facilities could place on the country’s electricity and water infrastructure.
In commentary shared on Instagram, Hector Luis Alamo raised concerns about proposals reportedly involving two US companies, billions of dollars in potential investment and thousands of promised jobs. The commentary claims the planned AI infrastructure could require approximately 450 megawatts of power and compares that figure with a reported national peak electricity demand of 1,456 megawatts.
The comparison has fuelled questions about how such large-scale facilities would be powered and whether additional electricity-generation capacity would be required to support them without affecting existing consumers.
Water has also emerged as part of the discussion. Many communities across Trinidad and Tobago continue to experience inconsistent water supplies, making the potential resource requirements of large data centres a sensitive issue. Data centres can require significant cooling infrastructure, although actual water consumption varies considerably depending on the technology and cooling systems used.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has reportedly sought to address such concerns, indicating that the proposed facilities would not negatively affect the country’s water and electricity supplies.
The projects could represent a significant opportunity for Trinidad and Tobago if the promised investment and employment materialise, potentially positioning the country as a regional hub for AI and digital infrastructure. However, questions remain about the projects’ final scale, energy requirements, cooling technology, timelines and the infrastructure that would be developed to support them.
It is also important to distinguish between the proposed capacity of a data centre and the amount of electricity it would continuously consume. Comparing a project’s maximum planned capacity directly with national peak electricity demand does not necessarily mean the facilities would immediately consume that proportion of the existing grid.
The debate therefore centres on a broader question: whether Trinidad and Tobago can capture the economic benefits of the rapidly expanding global AI industry while ensuring that new industrial demands do not come at the expense of reliable services for residents.
As more details of the proposed developments become available, the terms of the agreements and plans for additional power, water and supporting infrastructure will be critical to assessing the true impact on the country.
