Trinidad and Tobago to Penalize Illegal Re-entries with Jail Time, Announces Homeland Security Minister

In a recent announcement, Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander revealed plans to amend immigration laws in Trinidad and Tobago. The proposed changes are aimed at introducing jail sentences for deported migrants who make illegal re-entries into the country. This comes as authorities express growing concern over individuals who are deported and return shortly after via illegal routes. Alexander argues that stronger penalties are needed to deter repeat breaches of immigration rules.

Alexander is seeking support from the Cabinet and parliament for the proposed changes. He stressed that securing the country’s borders is not just a matter of immigration, but a serious national security issue. Additionally, the Government is reviewing cases of migrants who attempted to comply with a recent registration exercise but encountered genuine difficulties.

However, Alexander made clear that those who entered the country illegally after the registration process began will not be given any leniency. The Government is also maintaining its enforcement against illegal cross-border trade. This includes a recent police action in Cedros targeting suspected smuggling activities involving livestock and other goods.
