Employees at the Medway wagon maintenance and repair workshop in Entroncamento have reported deteriorating working conditions, citing significant structural issues within the facility. Workers, who requested anonymity due to fears of professional retaliation, stated that the building has suffered from missing roof tiles for several years, with some areas reportedly affected since 2021.
According to the employees, the situation has worsened significantly since January 28, leading to water ingress during rainfall. Photographic evidence provided to the media outlet O Mirante shows damaged roofing and signs of water infiltration inside the workshop. Workers expressed concern that water is leaking near electrical panels, creating potential safety hazards for staff required to work in those areas.
In addition to the structural damage, employees criticized the general maintenance of the facility, describing the interior as unclean and accusing Medway of failing to perform necessary repairs. The workers are calling for urgent intervention to address the safety risks posed by the water leaks near electrical equipment.
Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP), the state-owned company that owns the building, confirmed that the workshop is part of its property portfolio but is currently under a concession agreement. In a statement, IP clarified that the contract stipulates the concessionaire is responsible for the maintenance and conservation of the facilities, including the repair of any deterioration or malfunctions that may occur.
The responsibility for the upkeep of the site rests with the entity operating the workshop under the terms of the concession contract. Employees are currently awaiting a resolution to the reported issues.
