**Taiwan Foreign Minister Criticizes China’s Conduct at Pacific Islands Forum**
Taiwanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung has condemned China’s diplomatic conduct at this week’s Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders’ Meeting in Palau, characterizing Beijing’s approach as “wolf warrior” diplomacy that threatens regional unity.
Speaking to reporters in Taipei on Thursday following his return from the summit, Lin stated that China’s objections to Taiwan’s attendance were unwelcome and offensive. According to Lin, Chinese officials argued that Taiwan was not qualified to participate and warned that its presence would result in “consequences.”
“This kind of Chinese ‘wolf warrior’ diplomacy could easily undermine unity in the Pacific, and is offensive and detestable,” Lin said. He noted that the PIF is composed of 18 member countries, while China, Taiwan, and other dialogue partners attend as invited guests to support regional development. He emphasized that the “Pacific way” is defined by openness and inclusivity.
Lin criticized Beijing for failing to respect the host nation’s authority, alleging that China attempted to exert undue influence over the proceedings. He specifically cited China’s recent travel warning for Palau—which labeled the country an “unsafe travel destination”—as an example of “absurd and ironic” behavior.
Beyond verbal intimidation, Lin pointed to broader security concerns, noting that China’s test-firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile in the Pacific in July had caused alarm among regional nations. He reported that PIF leaders adopted a resolution during the summit condemning the missile launch for its impact on regional peace and stability.
Lin characterized the Chinese government’s approach as a “zero-sum” strategy that is incompatible with the interests of the Pacific region.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the minister’s remarks.
When asked about his interactions with U.S. officials during the summit, including U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, Lin described the exchanges as natural interactions between attendees at the event.
