SMHI issues yellow warning for torrential rain in western Sweden

After a week of scorching heat with temperatures reaching 30°C, Sweden’s weather agency SMHI has issued a yellow warning for torrential rain in western Sweden on Saturday. The warning covers Västra Götaland County and parts of Jönköping, Örebro and Värmland counties, effective from 10am to 10pm.

According to SMHI meteorologist Fanny Saarela, heavy showers could bring 30 to 60 millimetres of rain in a short time, potentially causing flooding on roads and viaducts. ‘It is a low pressure system that is coming in, and at the same time, it has brought down colder air. So these rain showers will probably be heavy,’ Saarela said.

The dry ground from the heatwave may absorb much of the rain, reducing the risk of widespread flooding. However, urban areas with hard surfaces are still vulnerable. Temperatures will drop sharply to between 15 and 20°C on Saturday, and only 15°C on Sunday. Saarela noted that a return to the recent hot weather is unlikely. In the far north, even snow patches are possible on the highest mountain peaks.
