‘Shame on You’: Sonam Wangchuk Fires Back After Breaking Hunger Strike Amid Criticism

Sonam Wangchuk, the noted activist, faced a storm of criticism after deciding to end his prolonged hunger strike. In response, he released a video message late Friday night, hitting back at his detractors with a sharp ‘Shame on you’.

Wangchuk clarified that no agreement had been reached with the government. He explained that the sole reason he broke the fast was the fear that students and protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar might face police action.

‘Several central ministers met me late at night, but there was no accord. I ended the strike only to prevent any crackdown on our young demonstrators,’ Wangchuk stated in the video.

The activist’s explanation has divided opinion, with some supporting his move to protect protesters and others accusing him of capitulating. The hunger strike had drawn national attention to demands for educational and employment reforms.
