Serres: fermerët nxjerrin traktorët në Lefkonas dhe kërkojnë takim me Mitsotakis

On Saturday, 7 September 2026, farmers and livestock owners from the Serres region gathered at the Lefkonas intersection in Serres, Greece, to display a symbolic protest in the run‑up to a visit by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The participants parked a number of tractors at 12:30 p.m. and left them in place without blocking traffic or impeding the movement of vehicles and residents. The protest was held on the occasion of the city’s patron saint celebrations and the return of church relics that had been stolen. According to local media outlets Thesspost and Evima Serres, the farmers and livestock owners used the event to demand a meeting with the prime minister and to press for solutions to several pressing issues: delays in the submission of tax declarations, unpaid payments, and rising production costs. Janis Turturas, a representative of the Promahonë Block, said the main objective was a meeting with the prime minister. “Things have been getting worse for years,” he told Thesspost. “The OSDE declarations are not progressing – we see only a 15–20 % improvement – farmers are still unpaid, the carbon premium has disappeared, and the problems with KAEK and the cost of production against low prices are eroding farmers’ income.” Turturas added that, according to information from the declaration acceptance centers (KYD), the declarations would not be completed until January. Anastasios Gkiorkinis, chairman of the Agro‑Livestock Association, warned of a “slow death” of the primary sector in Serres. Unionist Vasilis Staliopoulos highlighted the unsustainable cost of production, as reported by Thesspost. It remains to be seen whether the prime minister will agree to the requested meeting. Thesspost outlines two possible scenarios: a meeting on Saturday at 17:30 in Lefkonas, before the prime minister’s arrival in the city, or a later meeting in a closed setting within the city in the evening.
