Scout Leader Vincent Ramoutar Faces Backlash Over Emancipation Day Grave Cleanup

A heritage preservation project carried out by members of the Sea Scouts on Emancipation Day has sparked widespread discussion across Trinidad and Tobago, with many citizens questioning the symbolism of the activity taking place on a day dedicated to commemorating the emancipation of enslaved Africans.
The project involved Scouts cleaning and preserving the historic graves of the Sir Lamont family, former owners of the Palmiste Estates. Organizers said the initiative was intended to help preserve an important part of the nation’s historical heritage while encouraging young people to take an active role in conservation.
However, after images of the activity circulated online, social media users voiced strong objections. Many argued that while preserving historical sites is important, choosing Emancipation Day for the exercise sent the wrong message because of the Lamont family’s association with Trinidad’s plantation era.
Others questioned the decision to involve children in the activity, suggesting the historical context surrounding the graves should have been considered more carefully. Some commenters described the timing as “insensitive” and “ironic,” while others defended the project, saying preserving history does not equate to celebrating it.
The debate has highlighted the ongoing challenge of balancing heritage conservation with the historical and emotional significance attached to national observances such as Emancipation Day.
At the time of publication, no official response had been issued addressing the criticism surrounding the timing of the initiative.
