Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer (SBM) has initiated a group-wide climate adaptation review following a summer season where extreme heat impacted restaurant operations. Deputy Chairman Stéphane Valeri announced the study on September 18, following the company’s Annual General Meeting, noting that while overall revenue grew by 8% during July and August, restaurant performance remained stagnant due to the weather.
Valeri stated that high temperatures discouraged guests from dining on terraces or consuming alcohol during peak afternoon hours. To address these challenges, SBM’s Director of Operations, Romain Meiran, has been tasked with leading a comprehensive study on how the group’s venues can better accommodate rising temperatures. The findings are expected by the end of 2026, with initial measures slated for implementation by April 2027.
Proposed adaptations include the installation of advanced misting systems, increased use of vegetation and shade on terraces, and upgrades to air conditioning units. A primary focus is the Salle des Étoiles at the Sporting Monte-Carlo, where existing cooling systems struggled to manage temperatures that remained above 30 degrees Celsius during some summer nights. Additionally, the company is evaluating the use of lighter uniforms for staff working in outdoor environments.
The review also considers potential shifts in dining hours. Valeri noted that customer behavior is changing, with more patrons arriving for lunch as late as 2:45 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. to avoid the midday heat. SBM is assessing whether to adjust kitchen operating hours at certain establishments to align with these trends.
Specific venues, such as La Vigie Monte-Carlo, have been identified for improvements to guest comfort. Despite the challenges posed by the heat, SBM reported strong financial results, with revenue reaching 271.3 million euros during the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year, representing an 11% increase.
