Samherji Completes Sea Wells for Its Icelandic Land-Based Salmon Farm

Drilling has been completed on 21 sea wells for Samherji’s land-based salmon farm at Eldisgarður, marking a construction milestone for the project also known as Salmon Garden, Fish Farmer reports.

According to Samherji, the wells reach depths of either 36 or 42 metres. Drilling began at the start of the year and took about nine months. Two teams carried out the work in week-long shifts, and dismantling of the drilling equipment began after the final shift.

The wells will supply fully saline groundwater to the farm. Each delivers about 500 litres of seawater per second, according to the report. Research on the well water found it to be very clear after natural filtration through lava on the Reykjanes Peninsula, with a temperature described as suitable for fish farming.

Samherji said access to seawater was a key consideration in choosing the location. The company described completion of the drilling as a major step forward for the development.

Construction activity on the first phase is currently at its peak, according to the report. Samherji Aquaculture employees are based at the site alongside contractors as work continues.

The farm is planned in three phases. When fully completed, it is expected to have capacity to produce around 36,000 tonnes of whole salmon annually. That figure represents the planned capacity of the finished facility, rather than current production.

The development is Samherji’s largest investment to date, the report says. Around 30 permanent jobs are planned for the first phase, rising to 60 once the entire project is finished. Most are described as knowledge-based roles, supported by the 120 employees and specialists already working at Samherji Fish Farming.

Completion of the wells establishes a key water-supply component while construction of the farm’s first phase continues.
