Rowley Alleges Threats from State Officials, Warns of Authority Misuse in Trinidad and Tobago

Former Prime Minister Rowley has made serious allegations, claiming that he and the People’s National Movement (PNM) headquarters have been threatened by state officials. Despite the gravity of these claims, Rowley remains steadfast, vowing to continue his fight for Trinidad and Tobago. He expressed his concern, stating that the Caribbean nation is heading towards a dangerous period marked by the misuse of state authority against perceived political opponents.

Rowley accused the current administration of targeting citizens based on their political affiliations. He also criticized the broad use of Preventive Detention Orders under the ongoing State of Emergency, highlighting concerns over the potential misuse of power. Rowley dismissed the notion that businessman Hadeed provided financial support to the PNM, amidst comments made by the Attorney General during parliamentary debates.

The former Prime Minister questioned the government’s reliance on emergency powers to combat crime, suggesting that normal criminal justice procedures should be employed when sufficient evidence is available. He further accused the administration of vindictive actions, particularly in their review of diplomatic passports, claiming attempts were made to revoke his children’s passports, only to discover they had never been issued such documents.

Rowley also addressed the controversy surrounding the financing of the reconstructed Balisier House, denying allegations that the project was funded through criminal activity. He stated that the reconstruction was financed through contributions from party members and supporters, and welcomed any lawful investigation into the matter. To date, the government has not publicly responded to Rowley’s allegations, and the claims have not been independently verified.
