Roger Alexander Revokes Hadids’ Preventive Detention Orders
The Minister of Homeland Security, Roger Alexander, has revoked the Preventive Detention Orders issued against businessman Dominic Hadeed and his wife, Genevieve Hadeed, ordering their release while the criminal investigation into an alleged assassination plot continues.
In a media release issued on Thursday, Alexander said he had reviewed the matter since issuing the detention orders on June 27 under the Emergency Powers Regulations 2026. The Hadids were initially arrested on June 24 as part of an investigation into an alleged plot to assassinate the Prime Minister and senior members of the Government.
According to the Minister, several developments influenced his decision. These included a recommendation by the Constitution’s Review Tribunal that continued detention was “not necessary or expedient in the public interest,” as well as a medical report concerning Dominic Hadeed’s condition. The Minister noted that Hadeed declined to be examined by an independent specialist appointed by the State.
Alexander also said investigations have since expanded beyond their original scope and now involve multiple jurisdictions, with both local and international law enforcement agencies continuing to work on the case.
He explained that the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council declined to hear the substantive appeal on an expedited basis. As a result, he said, maintaining the detention orders would likely have kept the Hadids imprisoned until the end of the current State of Emergency, a situation he described as disproportionate in the circumstances.
The Minister stressed that revoking the detention orders does not signal the end of the investigation. He said the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service has assured him that the Hadids will remain under monitoring and surveillance to ensure the ongoing criminal investigation is not compromised.
Alexander added that measures have also been put in place to protect those believed to be at risk, while containing any potential threats. He expressed the expectation that the Hadids will cooperate fully with all law enforcement agencies as investigations continue.
