Roadside Grass-Cutting Operations Raise Safety Concerns
Questions are being raised about the safety measures being used during roadside grass-cutting operations after workers were observed carrying out maintenance close to moving traffic in the Calcutta No. 1 area.
A photograph taken at approximately 6:48 a.m. yesterday, in the vicinity of Chinmaya, appears to show workers cutting grass along the roadside while motorists continued to use the roadway.
The image has prompted concern over the apparent absence of visible barriers or other protective measures separating the workers and their equipment from passing vehicles.
While roadside grass cutting is an important part of maintaining visibility, drainage areas and public spaces, the nature of the work can create potential hazards for both workers and motorists when it is carried out immediately alongside active traffic.
Grass-cutting equipment can disturb stones, pieces of metal and other debris hidden in vegetation, potentially sending material toward passing vehicles. Workers themselves may also be vulnerable when operating only a short distance away from moving traffic.
Traffic-control measures such as advance warning signs, cones, barriers and, where necessary, personnel directing vehicles can help alert motorists that maintenance work is taking place ahead and provide additional separation between traffic and the work area.

Instead, the issue centres on ensuring that the work is carried out with appropriate safeguards for the people performing it and those travelling through the area.
Residents and motorists are questioning whether there has been any change in the procedures governing roadside grass-cutting operations and whether contractors and maintenance crews are required to follow a standard traffic-management plan while working alongside active roads.
The incident also highlights the responsibility of motorists to exercise additional caution when approaching roadside workers, slowing down where necessary and allowing sufficient clearance when it is safe to do so.
