Malawi’s Confiscation Fund has been activated through newly introduced regulations. The Financial Crimes (Confiscation Fund) Regulations, 2026, which were gazetted on July 24, 2026, provide the rules governing access to the fund, expenditure of the money, and accountability. The fund, valued at approximately K16 billion, comprises billions of kwacha seized from criminals. The introduction of these regulations operationalizes the Confiscation Fund, which had previously existed largely on paper. The regulations outline the procedures for managing the fund, which is expected to be utilized in accordance with the newly established guidelines.
