The Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS), in partnership with the German Red Cross (GRC), hosted a two-day national training workshop in Islamabad to improve the quality and impact of climate journalism in Pakistan. The event, which concluded on September 10, 2026, provided training to more than 30 journalists and field reporters from regions identified as highly vulnerable to climate change, including Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The workshop focused on equipping participants with skills in climate science, data-driven reporting, mobile journalism, and human-centered storytelling. Organizers aimed to help journalists translate complex scientific data and community experiences into accessible reports that highlight both the challenges of environmental degradation and local resilience-building efforts.
The training sessions were led by various experts, including climate journalist Uneeba Waqar and mobile journalism trainer Abdul Razak Khatti. The curriculum covered story development, climate policy, and the use of digital tools to produce field reports. Representatives from the PRCS Climate Change Adaptation and Media & Communication departments facilitated the sessions, providing insights into the humanitarian scope of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
PRCS Chairperson Farzhana Naek stated that the initiative was designed to help journalists bring community-led solutions to the forefront of public discourse. She noted that informed reporting is essential for fostering public understanding of the climate crisis and encouraging action at the local level.
PRCS Secretary General Muhammad Abaidullah Khan emphasized that the training was intended to bridge the gap between climate realities and public awareness. He described the role of the media as a catalyst for accountability and preparedness in the face of increasing extreme weather events.
Participating journalists reported that the workshop provided practical techniques for interpreting climate data and identifying compelling story angles. The initiative concluded with a focus on establishing a sustained platform for professional networking and collaboration between humanitarian organizations and the media sector in Pakistan.
