Ralph Gonsalves Says Cuba Is No Threat, Condemns US

Former St Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves has delivered a forceful message against the United States embargo on Cuba, declaring that Cuba poses no threat and instead identifying the United States as the greater danger.

In a video shared on Facebook, Gonsalves urged support for a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for an end to the long-standing economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by Washington against Havana.

The veteran Caribbean leader described the embargo as criminal and condemned what he characterised as illegal coercive sanctions against the Cuban people.

His message centred on a direct rejection of the argument that Cuba represents a threat, while challenging the continued use of American economic pressure against the Caribbean nation.

Gonsalves, who served as Prime Minister from 2001 until 2025, has long been associated with regional diplomacy and advocacy for Caribbean sovereignty.

His latest remarks come as the United Nations continues its decades-long opposition to the American embargo.

In October 2025, the UN General Assembly adopted another resolution calling for the embargo to end, with 165 countries voting in favour, seven voting against and 12 abstaining.

Despite repeated international votes, the embargo remains in place. The United States maintains that its restrictions are intended to encourage political freedoms, respect for human rights and democratic reforms in Cuba.

Cuba and supporters of lifting the embargo argue that the restrictions place an unfair economic burden on the country and its population.
