Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday met Speaker Om Birla to demand an urgent parliamentary discussion on the police attack on student protesters. The meeting came a day after a peaceful march by supporters of the CJP (Cockroach Janata Party) was met with lathicharge and tear gas by Delhi Police, who denied permission for the rally.
Gandhi, accompanied by opposition MPs, posted a photo of the meeting on social media, stating: ‘Our demand is simple: Parliament must discuss the brutality unleashed on students yesterday and the government’s complete abdication of responsibility for the exam crisis. Students were attacked for asking legitimate questions about their future.’
The opposition has been demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET paper leak. Both Houses of Parliament saw disruptions as opposition MPs protested the crackdown.
‘If Parliament cannot debate the future of India’s youth, what is it for?’ Gandhi asked, vowing that the opposition would not allow the issue to be swept under the carpet. The Speaker has not yet responded to the demand.
