Prisoner Reportedly Escapes Hospital Custody After Jumping 20 Feet at Mt Hope Facility

A 30-year-old prisoner reportedly escaped police custody at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope after jumping approximately 20 feet from an elevated area of the hospital, according to the Trinidad Express. The incident occurred on Sunday evening while officers were escorting him for medical treatment.

The report identifies the prisoner as Darren Stewart, of Upper Irvin Street, Petit Bourg. He had been detained at the St Joseph Police Station when he complained of abdominal pain, fever and difficulty urinating. Emergency Health Services personnel arrived at the station at about 4:05 p.m. to assess him.

An emergency medical technician reportedly observed signs of infection, a fever and very low blood sugar, and advised that Stewart be taken to hospital for further treatment. At approximately 5:01 p.m., two police officers were assigned to escort him to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex. He was handcuffed and taken to the facility, where he was registered and assessed before being directed to a room on the fourth floor to see a doctor.

At around 7:20 p.m., a doctor examined Stewart and initially indicated that a CT scan was required. He was escorted to the Radiology Department, but the doctor subsequently advised that the scan was no longer necessary because one had reportedly been performed the previous week.

The escape reportedly occurred as Stewart was being escorted back towards the fourth-floor area. According to the newspaper, he broke away along an external corridor between the Radiology Department and the rear entrance of the Accident and Emergency Department. He jumped over a railing and fell approximately 20 feet onto his back before running between two buildings.

The accompanying officer pursued him but lost sight of him. The officer then went through the Accident and Emergency Department and exited through the main entrance in an attempt to locate him, but the search was unsuccessful.

The officer notified the National Operations Centre and conducted further checks, according to the report. A pair of long black jeans believed to belong to Stewart was later found near a fence in the vicinity of the Women’s Hospital.

Several police units assisted with the search, including St Joseph CID, Maracas/St Joseph Police, the Northern Division Task Force, the Micro Analysis Unit, Tunapuna CID and the Inter-Agency Task Force.

The supplied report does not confirm whether Stewart was subsequently located or provide an outcome from the search. His whereabouts therefore remain unconfirmed in the available account. The incident also leaves unanswered questions about the circumstances of the escape and the condition of the prisoner after the reported fall.
