A 23-year-old police officer from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is facing charges of misbehaviour in public office following the disappearance and subsequent recovery of a service-issued firearm. The officer, who has been with the force for approximately nine months, is due to appear in court on Monday, August 3.
The incident unfolded at the Mayaro Police Station on July 29, when internal checks revealed that a service firearm and ammunition were missing. An internal investigation was promptly launched, leading to the recovery of the missing items. Acting Sergeant Denoon laid the charge after a review by Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Anju Bhola.
The officer, residing at Seaview Lane, Mayaro, was taken into custody as the investigation progressed. The area where the firearm was found was meticulously processed by investigators, ensuring a thorough follow-up on the breach.
Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro has reiterated the TTPS’s commitment to upholding integrity and accountability within its ranks. “The TTPS maintains an uncompromising position on integrity and accountability. Any breach of trust, especially involving the handling of police firearms, will be met with zero tolerance,” he stated, underscoring the importance of public confidence in the service.
The upcoming court proceedings are expected to address the charges and further investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, as the TTPS seeks to reinforce its standards and public trust.
