**BETHLEHEM, West Bank** — The latest episode of the “PNN Accountability” program, produced by the Palestine News Network (PNN), focused on the preservation of Palestinian cultural heritage in the town of Battir and ongoing challenges within the regional fuel sector.
### Cultural Heritage and Agriculture in Battir
The program highlighted the role of local agriculture and cultural events in maintaining Palestinian identity. Battir recently hosted an expanded four-day eggplant market, an event designed to support local farmers and promote traditional agricultural practices.
Maha Odeh, director of the Bethlehem office of the Palestinian Cultural Centre, stated that the market serves as a platform for farmers and artisans to showcase agricultural produce and handicrafts. According to Odeh, the event aims to bolster the livelihoods of local producers and encourage domestic tourism.
Odeh noted that Battir has become a significant destination for visitors interested in the town’s traditional irrigation systems and water sources. She added that the expansion of the market from one day last year to four days this year was intended to provide greater visibility for local agriculture and strengthen community engagement.
### Challenges in the Fuel Sector
The second segment of the program addressed recent instability in the fuel sector, characterized by supply shortages and fluctuating prices.
Khaled Sarahana, secretary of the Fuel Stations Union, reported that fuel stations have faced intermittent supply shortages in recent months, particularly on Fridays and Saturdays. These disruptions have occasionally brought some stations to a near-halt. Sarahana noted a recent improvement in supply levels, expressing hope that the sector is moving past the immediate crisis.
Beyond supply issues, Sarahana identified a decline in consumer demand as a primary concern. He attributed this trend to rising fuel costs and broader economic pressures, which have reduced the purchasing power of consumers.
Regarding future pricing, Sarahana noted that fuel prices in Israel have shown signs of a decline, which he expects will eventually influence diesel prices in the Palestinian market. Local fuel prices are adjusted on the final day of each month.
“PNN Accountability” aims to document issues impacting daily life in the West Bank by providing a platform for stakeholders to discuss current challenges and potential solutions.
