Malawi’s music royalty payday has arrived. The Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma) has disbursed K1.8 billion in blank media levy royalties to artists, with top musicians leading the list of earners.
The payout is a landmark for the creative industry, reflecting growing financial returns for artists through copyright collection. Among the biggest winners in the music category are Phyzix, Onesimus, Lucius Banda, Zeze Kingston, Driemo, Kelly Kay, and Saint.
Cosoma’s distribution comes from levies on blank recording media, a key revenue stream for compensating artists whose work is copied or recorded. The society periodically allocates these funds to registered rights holders based on usage data.
For the artists named, the payout marks a significant boost, reinforcing the value of intellectual property in Malawi’s music scene. The list underscores the commercial impact of these musicians, who continue to dominate airplay and streaming platforms.
Cosoma has not disclosed individual amounts, but the collective K1.8 billion payout represents one of the largest royalty distributions in the country’s creative sector.
