One of Malta’s Last Traditional Firillas Gets a New Lease of Life

A rare piece of Malta’s maritime history is being brought back to life. One of the last remaining traditional Maltese firillas – a type of fishing boat – is undergoing restoration and will soon be exhibited on the waterfront in Marsaxlokk.

The project aims to preserve a vessel that represents a dying part of the island’s seafaring heritage. The firilla, once a common sight in Maltese harbours, is now a rarity.

During the winter months, the restored boat will be displayed along the Marsaxlokk promenade, giving locals and tourists alike a chance to appreciate the craftsmanship of a bygone era.

This initiative highlights ongoing efforts to safeguard Malta’s cultural assets and keep traditional skills alive for future generations.
